Intervals: In this exercise, you will hear two notes in sequence. For best results, practice a little bit every day: This will save you frustration and unexpected expense. These exercises will improve your musical ability by developing a more intuitive understanding of what you hear. Start by trying to match your voice to a keyboard. If the 5 star people really benefitted themselves, I think they would tell us how they used the book specifically, and the pluses and minuses. At least the 3 star reviewer was a real purchaser who tried using the book. It does not sound to me like those people really bought / used the book. Lastly, many of the 5 star reviews say things like "this book will help you." whatever.blah blah blah. I too was one who lip-synced Happy Birthday because I was so horrible. It is great fun to belt out a tune and be not terrible. I am still at this stage, so the book has been a huge help to me even though I am still basically on exercise 1! And I'm kind of proud of my new singing voice, frankly. It will help you A LOT and get you set up to make good use of the book. Then sing it a couple of times, and go to the next note. If you are way off, like me, just keep hitting the note and try singing it again, over and over, getting ever closer, until you are on it. Do not go to the next note until you have matched the current note. So, you want to play scales, very slowly, matching your voice to the note, one at a time. I had a terrible singing voice, and after a little work, I can now sing along with the car radio, much much much improved. And yes, you have to sing, and the worse your singing voice, the more you need to do it, AND, the steeper your "improvement curve" will be. So now, let me get you started (per exercise 1 of this book) so you are not dismayed and put the book away for months as I did.

I was a little dismayed when I received this book, to learn that I should have a keyboard or similar, but again I quickly saw the value in being able to push a key and hear what the note should be, so I bought a relatively inexpensive keyboard with recording capability which I also use to play the cello in tune. you must know precisely what the note should sound like. I am learning to play the cello, so, no frets, no keys etc. However, I quickly realized why ear training is done this way and I see the value in it. Like the three star reviewer who has received so many comments, I did not realize that I would have to sing in order to train my ear. There's also no CD and no transcription exercises. The Prosser book focuses on various forms of sight singing, and it doesn't really have much explanation at all. I found this book much more useful than this other book Essential Ear Training for the Contemporary Musician. I used it and it has made a huge difference in my ability to transcribe melodies. This will play a I IV V I cadence and then ask you to identify a single note from that key. In addition to this book, I'd recommend picking up The Real Easy Ear Training Book which is a great complement to applying what you learn here to real songs.įinally, if you're looking to train your ability to hear single notes better, I strongly recommend you try the Functional Ear Trainer on Android. For the beginner it also provides some basic music theory with explanations which was very helpful and is a much more gradual approach than some other books you can buy. It comes with CDs so you can start transcribing simple melodic lines, rhythms, and eventually chord progressions. This book will teach you movable-do (although it uses numbers instead of the solfege symbols). I bought this book when I got started with ear training and it's fantastic.
